Sculpting is a unique act of creation that is based on perseverance and gentleness in which I let myself be guided by my hands and knowledge of the medium I am working with and the subject matter.
As a portrait artist I am passionate about capturing the unique characteristics of people in a way that captures the story of life and often their history.
Examples of this can be found in my recent projects such as Historic Houses and my new African series.
This work reflects my interest in the human face and form.
These sketches are mostly preparatory studies for portraiture.
I always enjoy a book illustration project since it gives me the chance to envision the story and create a compelling visual representation. As a portrait artist this is part of my natural approach to fine art. The illustrations shown here are for a book of love poems called “Love Is” by Roy Benson due to be published this year.
My Entry is the Winner of the Framing Knole competition for the National Trust at Knole House. on display whilst the original portrait of Sir John Frederick Sackville is being restored throughout the summer until October 2023 and spring of 2024.

This series is a result of a recent trip to Botswana and introduces the bushmen I met whilst wild camping in the north - Okavango Delta, Makgadikgadi Saltpans , Chose National park , and Moremi. These are preparatory sketches for the portraits to come. Each portrait will have an accompanying personal history of each tribe and a recording of each of the bushmen telling their own story.
